Frequently asked questions

Plastics technicians design and create plastic products, take care of their production and check their quality. In addition, they often take on tasks in the sale of finished parts. They are also responsible for the maintenance and care of the machines used for production.

A distinction is mainly made between solid plastics (thermosets), moldable plastics that can be shaped by heat (thermoplastics) and flexible, elastic plastics (elastomers).

Injection molding is a process in which molten plastics are shaped into a desired form using moulding tools. The material is heated, liquefied and injected into a mold, where it solidifies as it cools.

Plastic, also known as synthetic material or plastic, is a material whose base consists of artificially or semi-synthetically produced polymers with organic components.

Thermoplastics melt again when exposed to heat after hardening, while thermosetting plastics retain their solid form and are no longer malleable.

Thermoplastics such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyamides (PA), polylactide (PLA), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are used in a wide range of applications. PVC is mainly used in the construction industry for pipes, window profiles, cladding and floor coverings. ABS and PC are frequently used in the electronics industry, for example for device housings, computer accessories and telecommunications equipment.

Thermosetting plastics such as epoxy resin (EP), phenol-formaldehyde resin (PF), melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF), polyurethane (PU) and unsaturated polyester resin (UP) are widely used in various areas. In the construction industry, they are used for laminate flooring, façade panels and roof coatings. In electronics, thermosets are used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards, switches and insulating materials.
